Research areas

Prof. Bardy's research is concerned with the ecological and dynamical approach to problems of coordination and control of action. Two major aims of his work are to investigate how the numerous muscles, joints, or segments that constitute the human body are coordinated so as to promote functional actions, and to identify the role of movement-based information in the control of action, with a specific interest for "real-world" activities. His current research focuses on coordination and multimodal control of human posture and orientation, egomotion, as well as reaching and grasping in real and virtual environments. Methodologies involve data-based, experimental laboratory research using extensive, state of the art motion-capture apparatus (Vicon system, AMTI force plate, electromagnetic 6 DF devices), closed looped operation of simulation and virtual reality devices, as well as modelling human perception and performance. Prof Bardy is the author of more than 150 publications in peer-review journals (e.g., Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, Experimental Brain Research, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Perception & Psychophysics, etc…) books, or proceedings. He is currently involved in several international professional organizations [e.g., International Society for Ecological Psychology (board of directors); French Society for Movement and Sport Sciences (past president); American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, 2004 international fellow); European Network of Excellence Enactive Interfaces (6th FP, board of directors); European Integrated Project SKILLS (6th FP, Board of directors)]. He belongs to the Institut Universitaire de France and is the coordinator of the EuroMov project, a new centre for research and technological development in Movement Science in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
